What is Angiography?
This procedure involves using a contrast dye to help visualize the blood vessels in order to find blockages or other abnormalities. This is a diagnostic test which is performed prior to any treatment being performed. Often, CT scans and ultrasound scans will be performed as well to get a full picture of the blockage. If a blockage is found, an interventional procedure will be performed. Examples of these procedures are: angioplasty, atherectomy, and placement of a stent.
Procedure and Recovery Information for Angiography:
This procedure usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour to perform, but sometimes it can be longer. You are typically awake but under mild sedation to help you relax. Local anesthetic is used in the area in which the catheter is inserted. An X-ray will be used to visualize the blood vessels which are highlighted by the contrast dye. Recovery time is typically within a week or two. Your physician will provide you with specific guidelines for your recovery.
