What is an Atherectomy?
This procedure involves a catheter with a small cutting blade attached to the end. This blade is then used to shave off bits of the plaque which are then captured by the device for removal from the body. It is like a wood planer, but on a much smaller scale. This procedure is helpful for treating blockages that occur in areas that cannot be easily treated with a stent.
Procedure and Recovery Information for Atherectomy:
This procedure can take 1 to 2 hours to perform. Much like the angioplasty procedure, you will typically be awake but mildly sedated, and a local anesthetic will be used to numb the area of catheter insertion. Immediately after the procedure, you will need to lie flat for three to six hours. Full recovery time is typically several days to one week after the procedure. Your physician will provide you with specific guidelines for your recovery.
